Spine and Spinal Cord Surgery
Pre and post operative x-rays of a complex reconstruction of a patient with ankylosing spondylitis. Before surgery the patient was unable to stand or walk upright. Post operatively she is able to stand up straight and look ahead.

Spinal surgery accounts for more than 50 percent of neurosurgical practice and all neurosurgeons are well trained in this field. In addition, the Department of Neurosurgery at Shands at UF is proud to have several faculty experts in the area of complex spinal instrumentation, including Patrick Jacob, MD.

The Shands at UF Spine team perform virtually every type of spinal decompressive and reconstructive surgery to treat a full range of disorders including cervical, thoracic and lumbar disc disease, spinal and spinal cord tumors, fractures, spinal injuries and degenerative spinal diseases such as cervical and lumbar stenosis.

Each year the UF spine surgery team performs approximately 1,000 spinal procedures.

Types of spinal cord surgeries

Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery

UF neurosurgeons have been performing image-guided and microscope-assisted minimally invasive spine surgery for more than a decade. These techniques are routinely used for laminectomy, discectomy, spinal instrumentation and fusion procedures, reducing postoperative pain and speeding recovery for the majority of patients.

As recognized leaders in this area, the spine surgery team is involved in training both neurosurgeons and orthopaedic surgeons in the latest minimally invasive technologies, such as the use of an intraoperative CT scanner navigation system in the operating room.

Spinal Deformities

Pre and post operative x-rays of commonly
performed adult scoliosis correction surgery.

UF neurosurgeons have a special focus in the treatment of spinal deformities such as adult scoliosis. The surgeries are long and extensive, involving corrections in multiple sites on the spine, drawing on neurosurgical and orthopaedic techniques used in trauma, tumor and pediatric deformity surgeries.

Trauma Surgery

With a Level 1 Trauma Center, UF neurosurgeons perform as many as 75 surgeries annually for spinal cord injuries and provide patients with comprehensive care, including coordinating rehabilitation with Shands Rehab Hospital in Gainesville, designated as a State of Florida Brain and Spinal Cord Injury Program.

In addition, UF spinal surgeons offer FDA- approved diaphragmatic pacemakers which can free spinal injury patients from ventilators, enhancing the quality of life for these patients by providing them with freedom and mobility.

Spinal Surgery Research

UF neurosurgeons and neuroscientists were involved in the first U.S. human clinical trial of spinal cord transplantation. Embryonal stem cells were surgically implanted into patients with multiple recurrent syringomyelia. This Phase I study demonstrated safety and feasibility.

Researchers at the Evelyn F. and William L. McKnight Brain Institute of the University of Florida are currently continuing this line of research, using highly purified neural stem cells in an animal model of spinal cord injury.
